WATCH THE COMPANY YOU KEEP

WATCH THE COMPANY YOU KEEP!

“WATCH THE COMPANY YOU KEEP!”

Who or what do you keep company with?

Who or what do you regularly hang around and expose yourself to?

Do you realize that the company you keep powerfully influences your thoughts, desires, emotions, speech, behavior, decisions, and very posture in life whether you are aware of it or not?

Advertisers are well aware of this fact, that’s one reason advertising is a multi-million dollar industry.

When is the last time that you sat down and purposefully memorized a radio or television ad?

I doubt that many of us have ever done that, but isn’t it amazing the number of them that we know by repeated exposure to them.

Check out these commercials and see if you remember any of them?

“Hold the pickle hold the lettuce special orders don’t upset us all we ask is that you let us have it your way. Have it your way. Have it your way. Have it your way. Have it your way.” – Burger King

“I’d like to buy the world a home and furnish it with love, grow apple trees and honey bees and snow-white turtle doves. I’d like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony. I’d like to by the world a coke and keep it company. It’s the real thing…..” – Coke

“Put a Tic Tac in your mouth and gets  bang out of life it’s a clean fresh explosion of mint.” – Tic Tac Mints

“It’s 8:00 o’clock Heineken time. People do all sorts of things for a Heineken beer. Try one, and find out why.” – Heineken Beer (Okay, don’t shoot me, I am not promoting beer, just making a point. As a child growing up in the Bahamas I heard this ad religiously at 8:00 am on our major radio station for years.)

Did you remember any of them?

If not, are there any commercials that pop into your mind?

The point is that the reason you remember them is because you “kept company” with them and now they are a part of you without any effort on your behalf other than your repeatedly being in their presence – powerful stuff!

Of course this not only happens with commercials, but more importantly with people.

Take a moment and think about the people you keep company with at home, school, work, church, socially, in your neighborhood, etc.

“WATCH THE COMPANY YOU KEEP!”

How much of their mannerisms, thoughts, communication patterns, verbal expressions, fashions, values, beliefs, philosophies and/or views, have you assimilated into your life as a result of keeping company with them?

How much of them has subtly become a part of you simply because of repeated exposure?

Selah………pause and think about it!

Now take a moment and think about the company you keep online; the company you keep via email, blogs, chat rooms, instant messaging, tweeting, Skype, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, and the various other websites you frequent.

“WATCH THE COMPANY YOU KEEP!”

What mannerisms, thoughts, communication patterns, verbal expressions, fashions, values, beliefs, philosophies and/or views, have crept into your life as a result of keeping company with them?

The Bible has many words of wisdom about the company we keep. Here are a few:-

“Do not be so deceived and misled! Evil companionships (communion, associations) corrupt and deprave good manners and morals and character.”

(1 Corinthians 15:33 – Amplified Bible)

“He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.”

(Proverbs 13:20 – NIV, 1984)

“Don’t befriend angry people
or associate with hot-tempered people, or you will learn to be like them and endanger your soul.”

(Proverbs 22:24, 25 – NLT)

“The righteous should choose his friends carefully,
For the way of the wicked leads them astray.”

(Proverbs 12:26)

Because of its powerful influence, today be reminded to watch the company you keep because it will affect you either for better or worse.

Be encouraged!

  1. Yes, it is David, so do I. This is why it’s also good to ask ourselves what kind of company are we to others; how are we influencing their lives.
