5 SUBTLE MANIFESTATIONS OF PRIDE TO BE WARY OF

I'M BETTER THAN YOU

I’M BETTER!!!

Have you ever found your self saying or thinking one or more of the following?

1) “If I were him/her, I would have……….”

TRUTH – You are not him/her, and you can never be him/her so you really do not know what you would have done if you were him/her.

Selah!

2) “I’d never X………”

TRUTH – You have not stopped living yet and you really do not know what you will do in any given situation until you meet it face to face and have to deal with it.

Selah!

3) “If it were my son/daughter, I would….……..”

TRUTH – It’s not your son/daughter so you really do not know what you’d do until it is your son/daughter.

Selah!

4) “I’ve never partied, clubbed, smoked, gotten drunk, hung out with the wrong crowd, had sex outside of marriage, or stolen anything in my life…I never did any of those kinds of things……”

TRUTH – Whether visible or invisible, easily detected or subtle, socially acceptable or socially unacceptable, done in thought, word or deed, in God’s eyes, sin is sin so if committed, unforgiveness, bitterness, selfishness, gluttony, haughtiness, lying, deceitfulness, lust, envy, jealousy, gossip, and self-righteousness are all sins equally in need of forgiveness, cleansing and repentance.

Selah!

5) “I only deal with the best; I only drive X, I only eat Y, I only wear Z……”

TRUTH –  It’s only by God’s goodness, grace, favor and provision that you are able to have what you have; it’s not by your power so there is no room for boasting. As easy as He allowed you to have it, He can allow it to be taken away. Humble recognition of this and gratefulness to Him are in order.

Selah!

If you look closely, underlying each of these statements is a manifestation of pride.

Holman Bible Dictionaory has this to say about the meaning of pride:-

“Undue confidence in and attention to one’s own skills, accomplishments, state, possessions, or position. Pride is easier to recognize than to define, easier to recognize in others than in oneself. Many biblical words describe this concept, each with its own emphasis. Some of the synonyms for pride include arrogance, presumption, conceit, self-satisfaction, boasting, and high-mindedness. It is the opposite of humility, the proper attitude one should have in relation to God. Pride is rebellion against God because it attributes to self the honor and glory due to God alone. Proud persons do not think it necessary to ask forgiveness because they do not admit their sinful condition. This attitude toward God finds expression in one’s attitude toward others, often causing people to have a low estimate of the ability and worth of others and therefore to treat them with either contempt or cruelty. Some have considered pride to be the root and essence of sin. Others consider it to be sin in its final form. In either case, it is a grievous sin.”

“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

(Proverbs 16:18 – NIV)

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

James 4:6 (NIV)

“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Luke 14:11 (NIV)

SELAH!

Have you ever found your self saying or thinking one or more of the above statements?

Father help us to be aware of any pride in our lives and to confess it, ask your forgiveness for it and by your grace repent of it as soon as it is revealed to us in Jesus’ Name….Amen.

Be encouraged!
